Writing Tips
Madison Writes…

Hello!! I’m a long term reader of Chronicles of ancient darkness, currently re-reading for the third time and I’m currently on Skin-Taker, it’s such an awesome series!! Your book series has inspired me to try my hand at writing!
So with that said,
Do you have any tips for writing? I personally struggle with repeating words as well as what to mention and what not to (aka keeping stuff flowing and not getting distracted by explaining too much..)

Michelle Replies…

Hi, Madison.  Great to know that you like the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. Writing is hard, and we all struggle with the two things you mention – so you’re not alone there.  But the beauty of writing is that you can fix stuff, by re-writing.  So that’s my first, and most important tip.  Re-write.  And when you’ve become over-familiar with a piece of work, it can help a lot to put it away for a week or a month (if you can bear to) – and I mean right away, in a drawer or under your bed.  When you finally take another look at it, you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to spot what needs more work; after that, another bout of re-writing will often work wonders.  For my next tip: people often say “write about what you know”; but I much prefer “write about what you love”. And by that I mean write about whatever gives you a lift of the spirits, or a tingle of eagerness.  And if you don’t know much about your chosen subject to begin with, that’s fine; you can find out.  Finally, writing requires concentration.  And mobile phones and the internet are the enemies of concentration.  So help yourself out: silence the phone, and shun the internet while you’re writing. I hope these help a bit – and I’d like to wish you lots of luck for your writing.  The main thing is to keep going!  With best wishes, Michelle
